I was thinking about how I wanted to write longform thoughts about television, and then I remembered I had a livejournal. Nooot that I think anyone reading this has the poor sense of self-worth to still be exposing themselves to Julie Plec-run television, but still.

discussion of The Originals and why it doesn't work and why that is so deeply frustrating )

First of all, WHAT THE SHIT, ORIGINALS. Probably that should be WHAT THE SHIT, JULIE PLEC, YOU HELLBEAST. That's usually a good bet for who to blame. more about that, spoilery but you've probably heard about it if you're into tvd-verse stuff )

In happier news, I finally started watching Hannibal, because I'm on anti-anxiety meds now and won't become convinced beyond reason that I will be serial killed in some horrible ritualistic way if I watch stuff about serial killers. Anyway it's great, and I devoured (harhar) all of the aired episodes last weekend. Did have some weird dreams but nothing close to Will Graham levels. Although maybe not the best benchmark.

more thoughts on that )

Oh my god you guys, I have totally become obsessed with The Originals with the last couple of episodes. And certain happenings on TVD have really reignited my interest in that show as well (even if Elena/Damon still makes me roll my eyes).

spoilers for all aired episodes of the originals and tvd )

Between these two shows and Teen Wolf seemingly back on track and much more enjoyable this season(b), I am very happy to have my teen supernatural shows back to being enjoyable instead of painful to watch.

[livejournal.com profile] quiet_rebel asked me about couples I ship on The Originals.

I'm all about the OT4 on this show. By which I mean, Klaus/Rebekah/Elijah/Hayley. One big happy Original family. I, like Elijah, just want everyone to stop fighting and be friends again. Raise your adorable magic vampire werewolf hybrid baby together in joy and happiness! Try to avoid letting an old enemy kidnap it and take it to hell and raise it to hate you and collect ears though. Just some advice.

Within the OT4, I've really been enjoying the Elijah/Hayley stuff. I've always felt like the Originals were kind of... huge idiots when it comes to falling in love. Despite the fact that they're so old and have seen so much, they still idealize the people they fall in love with in this really dangerous way. Elijah is no exception, as he demonstrated with Katherine and as he's shown endlessly with Klaus (whether or not he's *in* love with him, he still loves him). That's the only kind of relationship Rebekah seems capable of, and Klaus has a tendency to idealize the women he falls in love with too. So anyway, what I really like about Elijah/Hayley is that she won't let him get away with that. She's too much of a realist - and she's in a unique position of power that I doubt any other human or vampire ever has been with the Original Fam. Because all of the still-living Originals are deeply invested in her well-being, at least until she has that baby (although I do think definitely Elijah and Rebekah and maybe Klaus are invested afterward too). Although she's Klaus' prisoner right now, she can do and say things that no one else could ever get away with. And she's kind of been let into their inner circle in an unprecedented way.

So, anyway, my point is that even though there are still huge power differentials between Hayley and the Originals, she is the closest a non-Original could get to being on equal playing ground with them, which makes her relationships with them and especially Elijah so much more interesting. Although it has the potential to be a tragic immortal/mortal love story unless the baby really does have magic doppelgänger blood.

I really wish Rebekah could stop falling in love with idiots who don't respect her and basing her self-worth on it though. I wish I trusted Julie Plec to be building up to some storyline where Rebekah could realize she don't need no man, but, uh, I'm not getting my hopes up, to say the least.

Feel free to give me some more suggestions to help fill out my calendar here!

[livejournal.com profile] ladyoneill asked me for my favorite character on The Originals. Which is tough, because it changes a lot and I actually kind of love most of the characters on this show, which is a nice change from The Vampire Diaries, where I like pretty much two of the characters (Stefan and Caroline, if you're wondering).

Easily the biggest surprise is Hayley. She was so boring on TVD, I just endured her scenes. She seemed to have no point and no real characterization that stuck. But on The Originals? She's awesome. Snarky and fierce and has amazing chemistry with Elijah. There's a lot of potentially gross issues with women-as-baby-incubators in her storyline that I am nervous about someone like Julie Plec dealing with. It's obvious Elijah and Rebekah care for her as a person, and, despite his constant douchiness, I don't think Klaus would ever actually hurt her after the baby was born. She's not showing much yet, and I can never tell how time passes on TVD-verse shows, so I don't know if she'll give birth for May sweeps. But I'm certainly warily interested to see how the show deals with a not pregnant Hayley.

Also Cami is surprisingly great! Calling Klaus on his bullshit (most of the time). Outsmarting Klaus despite his serious magical advantage. I was worried she'd be a Caroline replacement, and in some ways I still think she is, but she's enough of her own person that it works. It'd be super great if Klaus could stop CONSTANTLY ERASING HER MEMORY though. That's always been one of my biggest issue with this universe though - non-consensual memory erasing. IT'S REALLY NOT OKAY, EVERY VAMPIRE IN MYSTIC FALLS. It is not a way to solve problems!

I also still adore all three Originals, even when Klaus is a ridiculous douchebag who gets teary-eyed about ~betrayal~ like every other minute. I wish Rebekah would stop relying on men so much for happiness, but I still love her. And then there's Elijah. So well-dressed, so dryly hilarious, so fantastic. LITERALLY A DREAM MAN. This is an awkward sentence to write, but ... when he ripped all those people's hearts out, I, like Klaus, swooned a little bit.

Also, Davina, who started out a little too teenage girl on the CW for me (which, well....) has become pretty interesting in the last few episodes, and I love her relationship with Josh, who is a much needed queer character in the extremely straight TVD-verse (and CW in general). I like that he kind of has the Dumb Human in Over His Head Role, but he's actually a vampire.

Marcel is charming, but I haven't really super warmed to him yet. I still feel like we don't really know him and his motivations that well.

Okay, so I pretty much just went through every character on the show. Right now my favorite is probably still Elijah, although the women of this show are really great and definitely giving him a run for his money. Talk to me at the end of this season - if the show doesn't turn horrible like TVD did - and maybe my favorite will be Hayley or Cami or Rebekah.
