[livejournal.com profile] fledmusic asked me about The Good Wife.

this got a little long )

Okay, since that's just the women, I may have to do The Good Wife pt. 2 for [livejournal.com profile] mistakency one of these days, talking about the men.

It feels like it's been forever since I talked about TV. Sadly that's probably because not much has been super amazing this year. But, still, some stuff has been pretty enjoyable. And now I am OFFICIALLY on winter break, so I actually have some free time!

Homeland )

Revenge )

Haven )

The Good Wife )

Elementary )

The Vampire Diaries )

Still loving my comedies for the most part: Happy Endings, Parks & Rec, Go On. I've also been slowly watching Archer on Netflix, and, yes, it is pretty amazing. I've also been watching Arrow, Revolution, and Once Upon a Time (yay women!), but don't have much to say about them. They're enjoyable but I don't think about them much afterwards. Except for how I wish we lived in a time where Aurora and Mulan could actually have the intense love story that they are currently basically having anyway, who the fuck cares about Philipp. Also sometimes I watch a little of Supernatural after Arrow and I side-eye it so hard. Damn, show, what happened to you?

Question, guys: I feel this weird temptation to attempt to watch Star Trek... of some variety. I'm a little wary, because sci-fi of THAT level of cheese can be difficult for me to get into (I really had to work to persist through season one of Farscape, and I always get bored with the Stargates very quickly). But I may try, mostly because all of the TV series (and some of the movies) are on Netflix. It's just so easy! Anyway, we'll see how this goes. Any input from fans about jumping headfirst into things would be appreciated.

Also, so excited about Justified and Spartacus coming back in January! Well, also kind of more bracing myself for Spartacus.

First, here is my question: have you read any good long, plotty (or, like, fulfilling-delightful-cliche-y), preferably at some point smut-having (because I like to be honest with myself) fics lately? I'm weirdly jonesing for some Dean/Cas, but I am open to anything. I feel like I've kind of hit a fic wall.

Now, let's talk all about the sometimes awesome, sometimes boring, but not generally terrible television I've been watching this season.

I also watched the pilots of Arrow, Last Resort, and Elementary and enjoyed them, but I'll have to see if I have time to watch them. None of them were really must watch to me.

I had my last undergraduate class today. Bizarre. I'm relieved to be done, honestly, but I will miss all the fun and ridiculous classes I got to take. Like the Beatles class, and the Lord of the Rings class. Those were good times. I just need to write a short paper tonight and then I have a final on Tuesday, and I'm done. This whole week has been very weird.

Also, discovering hockey RPF came at a terrible time for me, as I've been procrastinating soooo very badly right around finals time. I just sit there and ask myself, "Do I want to write this paper, or do I want to read this 100K Kane/Toews fic?" The paper never stood a chance. And I think I've come to the (deeply embarrassing) conclusion that Kane/Toews is totally my OTP in this fandom, and while I enjoy reading other stuff, nothing quite does it for me like those losers being constipated about their feelings. Ugh. So awful. Why.

Now I have a few thoughts about some television.

I decided it was time to do a State of the TV-I-am-watching address. These all contain spoilers up to the latest episode unless I say otherwise. I gave up on Glee and Ringer a few episodes into the season, and I have not watched any of Supernatural. Is SPN worth watching these days? I mostly just watched it for Castiel the last three seasons, and I gather things are not great in that quarter, so I'm not sure it's worth it for me. I don't think I can take another season of Sam and Dean crying in front of picturesque mountains and not talking about the same issues they've not talked about for seven years.

What the actual fuck, self. I watch way too much television. I am also watching Up All Night and Grimm, but I don't have much to say about them other than they are enjoyable. And I'm also watching Misfits, but I'm behind on it so I will talk about that at some later point.
sarkastic: (tgw - w/a bad timing)
So yeah, I'm pretty upset about the whole delicious thing. I had just started doing a revamp of my bookmarks to add more specific tags for tropes and genres and things like that. And then they... destroyed everything. :( I shelled out the $9 and change for a Pinboard account, where I am innuendosquad (although sadly I lost all the dates for when I uploaded stuff, because delicious is stupid). Let me know if you're on there too. Delicious may be returned to its full capabilities, but I don't like the direction it's heading. Pinboard feels far more secure, and because it's a pay service, I feel better about its chances of not being totally remodeled into a hellish landscape of uselessness.

But on to happier news. The Good Wife was amazing. If you're not watching this show, seriously. I don't even know what to do with you. If you want to be masochistic in that way, I guess I can't stop you from hurting yourself. But can I just say that this show is one of the only shows on television where the sex actually looks enjoyable for the woman? In fact, almost all the sex scenes (if not all) have focused specifically on female pleasure in a way that no other network television show is even getting close to. There's no gentle, breathy ~lovemaking~ while acoustic guitars serenade you and some sort of vague swaying on top of each other occurs. And so much of the softcore porn on HBO and Showtime is always... I imagine the directors being like, "No, grunty-er! Thrust harder! Grimace! Look dazed, female actress!" Like it just doesn't even look comfortable, let alone pleasurable. I find myself wincing and crossing my legs during most of the sex scenes on True Blood. But TGW. Yeah. Just. It was good for me. Even its sex scenes are classy.

P.S. I get to see Jon Stewart this weekend. \o/

P.P.S. Even though Bayern are the Evil Empire, I always like to see German teams do well in the CL (gotta keep that extra qualifying spot from Italy!), so that was happy-making. And holy shit, Carlos Tevez, you is a crazy bitch.
sarkastic: (tgw - w/a you should be with me instead)
1. I read The Hunger Games trilogy during LJ: The Russians Attack Part II! Or whatever part we're on now. I really enjoyed them, although I actually wish they'd been a bit longer and more complex. I honestly wasn't sure how I felt about Katniss until pretty much the very end, but in the end I decided I liked her. My favorite interactions in the series were probably between her and Haymitch rather than either of her love triangle boys. Although I did like Peeta as well. These could be really awesome movies, or they could try and water down the dark stuff and make them Twilighty and I will cry a little bit. Despite the suckiness of whitewashing Katniss, I do think Jennifer Lawrence could do a fantastic job with this if given the right material. She already proved to be exceptionally badass in that understated survivor way in Winter's Bone.

Is there any good Hunger Games fanfic out there? I would read pretty much any pairing/character, to be honest.

2. Captain America was enjoyable. I especially enjoyed that there was a main character named Peggy! But of course she was born in the 1920s or thereabouts. Anyway, if I am going to rank the Avengers solo movies, here's where I'm feeling them: Iron Man > Thor > Captain America > Iron Man 2 > The Incredible Hulk. Why can't there be a Loki? Where he just runs around trolling all these guys/the world? Oh, I believe that's going to be called The Avengers.

3. I'm nearing that phase where I'm beginning to have some light to medium mental breakdowns because I have to graduate in a year and I never really ever want to do that can't I please stay in school forever and take weird classes about really obscure subjects? *sigh* I guess I should just enjoy it while it lasts. I want to apply to grad schools as soon as possible in fall so I can get that stuff off my mind and enjoy my last two semesters. And then I will sell my drugs/my body/kittens for vampire poker so I can financially survive grad school!

4. The promo art for The Good Wife S3 is decidedly sexier than it's ever been before. I hope this means there will be more sexy times. Don't tease me like this, show.

5. I am going to make a post about all my crazy ASOIAF theories, but I am going to do it in a separate post because it is getting lengthy.
sarkastic: (got - blood of the dragon)
1. I've been taking it slow with A Storm of Swords. I think I got a little fatigued by reading the first two so fast AND watching the show. So I am taking it slow. Also I think at some point I realized that I was going to have to wait possibly more than ten years to get any real resolution to this story and I was like WELL FUCK. Plus everything was real depressing for awhile but it's picked back up again, so I'm not like NOTHING IS BEAUTIFUL AND EVERYTHING HURTS every time I turn a page. I think I will save my specific thoughts until I finish the whole book, though.

2. I introduced a friend to The Vampire Diaries so we've been slowly making our way through S1 (she's completely addicted of course - resistance is futile!). I miss the slow burn of building friendship and trust between Elena and Damon, before Damon went all Damon-y on that. Stupid Damon. So many times I just want to shake him. WHAT WHAT WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

3. I've been loving the Women's World Cup. Germany in particular play some beautiful football. And the games, in general, have been so much fun to watch. Almost no diving! Near total unpredictability as to who will win and how! And I just love watching so many talented women so very obviously delighted beyond words at representing their country and playing with their friends and living their dreams. There's something so genuine about women's football that died long, long ago in the men's sport. You can look at these women's faces and it's like looking back however many years and seeing a little girl achieving everything she ever dreamed of. I love it.

4. I probably won't post again before the 4th of July, as we're going to be having no less than six house guests (although two of those are my sister and her boyfriend - and all of them are people I like!) and we're hosting the increasingly gigantic family party for the 4th. But it should be great! I anticipate being slightly buzzed and really full for the next four or so days. Since my dad has given up on me ever liking beer, he just buys me wine instead. Fine with me! Especially when he goes to the big liquor store and gets Austrian wine. Mmmmm Grüner Veltliner.

5. I would kill for an Alicia from The Good Wife vid to this song (Irreplaceable by Beyonce). Also I love Beyonce's vaguely gay all woman band. And Beyonce in general.
sarkastic: (misc - stephen's jewish friend)
Happy-making things:

1. Liverpool's fate is in their own hands now. They win all three of their last games and maintain a higher goal difference than the Spurs, and they qualify for Europe next season. Simple as that. YOU CAN DO IT BOYS.

2. I've started having dreams about The Good Wife. It is a good thing we FINALLY get a new episode this week because I am about to lose it.

3. Doctor Who! They are setting up such an epic season and it is probably going to break me in some way but I DON'T CARE. Also I just watched the confidentials and it deeply amuses me that a yellow school bus is something that's iconic American to British people. Or at least the British people who make DW. It's so commonplace! It's hard to think of it as novel to other people.

4. I got tickets to see Jon Stewart at my school's auditorium this September! Ahhhhhhhhhhh. So excited I could pee.

Sad-making things:

1. Finals. I still have half a paper on the causes of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 to write. Ugh. It's not that I don't find this interesting, it's just that we've been talking about it for weeks now, and, also, it's a paper. Although my final for my LOTR class was basically, not in these words, to write a piece of fanfiction. LMFAO. So great. And of course I chose the most fucking obscure thing I could find. (It takes place in Cardolan aka one of the realms of the northern kingdom of the Numenoreans that was destroyed by Angmar.) I actually really enjoyed it. Maybe I should write ridiculous gen pieces of forgotten Middle Earth history that no one else cares about more often.

But, in any case, once I finish this paper I will be done with all the hard stuff, and then I'm officially done. Well, until the 10th when my summer class starts. *sigh*

Well, better college than real life, am I right?
sarkastic: (tvd - ot3 bloody your hands on a cactus)
1. I'm kind of obsessed with the idea of a Katherine from TVD vid set to the Nicki Minaj verse of "Monster" by Kanye West. Really all of it would make a good TVD-in-general vid but lately I keep going back and listening to Nicki over and over. I kind of wish that song was entirely Nicki Minaj, ngl.

2. Rewatching this season of Community, I realized that I have literally the exact same birthday as Troy: December 4th, 1989. I don't know why I find this so amusing. What are the odds, heh? CLEARLY A SIGN OF MY AWESOMENESS.

3. I have no idea if these attacks on lj mean anything serious, but I'm the same handle over at dreamwidth, although I haven't crossposted there since mid-2009. Just in case we all get taken out by Russian cyber terrorists.

4. Every time I think I can't love Stephen Colbert anymore, he goes and does something like give an overly complex explanation of an obscure bit of history from The Silmarillion, just off the top of his head. ILU STEPHEN. That was quite possibly the dorkiest thing I've seen you do. I actually did something similar to my own Tolkien professor when I gave an unnecessarily detailed quiz answer explaining the origin of the palantíri that he then had to go look up to verify. Fëanor's making us all look good! I have to admit, I was just a tiny bit disappointed in James Franco for thinking Galadriel and Elrond were wizards. Laaaaaaaame.

5. brief Good Wife spoilers )
sarkastic: (tgw - it's a fucked up ol' world)
It's gotten to the point with The Good Wife where I'm actually angry at the commercials for existing. I literally yell at them. IT'S SO INTENSE. spoilery thoughts )

Okay I guess in this post all I actually wanted to talk about was The Good Wife. It's more or less all that I care about right now. Well, I still love Justified but the Raylan/Winona stuff is starting to sour it a bit for me. She's just not a nice person! As my mom said quite accurately if melodramatically, she's poison to him! And it makes Raylan less likable when he's so dopey-eyed in love with her, when it's obvious to anyone else that she's a) using him and b) in love with - if any version of Raylan - a totally fictional version of him that only exists in her head. GIVE ME MORE AVA&BOYD AND THE OTHER MARSHALS AND THE CRAZY HARLAN MAFIA. So much better.

tonight's episode of The Good Wife )
sarkastic: (foot - it's true we love one another)
I don't think there's ever been a period of my now SEVEN YEAR LONG WTF livejournal existence where I've been this inactive before. Obvs there's the part where I'm living in Vienna, but I still read my flist regularly and try and keep up with fic. I think it has more to do with the fact that I feel kind of fandomless right now. My love affair with football is steadily waning. At least club football; I've barely watched any Liverpool or Stuttgart since I've been here, though I have watched all the Germany games. Clearly this may have something to do with both teams' abysmal performances this season and Liverpool's extremely close call with administration and possible relegation. IDK. Plus football fandom is kind of awful right now. And I'm still in that post-WC phase where just looking at Spain players who aren't Nando and Pepe makes me want to scream and throw things and have it be four years from now when I can have my sweet, sweet, sweet revenge. Er. Sometimes I have emotions? Thomas Müller is going to kick all those sad bitches' asses in four years? And two, for that matter.

ANYWHO. My activity in fandom these days is mostly reading copious amounts of Inception and Sherlock fic. Although I find there is a sadly small amount of Sherlock fic that actually fits with my preferred characterization of Sherlock, which is leaning a bit more toward the sociopath side of things and less woobie who just needs love. But, alas, such are the burdens I must bear.

The last episode of Community is literally one of my favorite things that has ever happened. I don't tend to rewatch stuff a lot, but I have probably watched that at least daily since it aired. Also The Good Wife is amazing and so sneaky feminist that Sexist Old Grandpa CBS doesn't even realize it's airing the most feminist and female-oriented show on television. One of the reasons - beyond the brilliance of the writing and the prominence of women on the show - that I feel like it is such a female-driven show is something in the way Will is written. Those fleeting glances and unconscious touches and the way he talks to her - IDK. My words fail me. Not that it makes it an unrealistic portrayal of a man, just that it's not necessarily the side that men would chose to focus on in themselves if this were a male-driven drama. ... If that makes any kind of sense.

And with that I say Tschüss because it is ridiculous and my favorite thing to say in German apart from Grüß Gott in a super Austrian accent to everyone I ever meet in Austria. My dad is visiting me and it will be awesome.
sarkastic: (tgw - it's a fucked up ol' world)
How did The Good Wife become the one show I watch where I still yell things at the TV and get really anxious and gleeful while watching? It's kind of funny that a show that is so reserved and subtle would make me yell obscenities at my TV. Also I realized that my enjoyment of an episode is pretty much directly proportional to how much Alicia is present in it. Not that I don't love the supporting cast (Kalinda! ♥), but... it's Alicia. She's the best. I'm so glad TGW continues to be awesome. How abysmal would TV be if SPN Attack of the Pod People 2010 was all I had to look forward to?

Also did you know that entering the State Hall of the Austrian National Library is pretty much like walking into the library in Beauty & the Beast? Yeah, there's one childhood dream fulfilled. THANKS, HABSBURGS! *wipes away single tear* Although the weather has been absolutely fucking abysmal here lately. Apparently scientists predict this will be the coldest winter in Europe in 1000 freaking years. REALLY, EUROPE. REALLY. Also our crazy brooch-wearing Austrian landlady ignores all calls for the lightbulbs in our chandelier (don't get excited, it's pretty jank) in the dining room/kitchen to be changed and now NINE OF THEM have gone out and we have one single bulb left working. It's a little dark in there, not gonna lie.

My parents sent me a care package full of candy and some stuff I needed, and my dad made me a little mixtape (on a flashdrive) of weird German versions of songs, songs that are inside jokes between me and him, and songs of ~fatherly guidance~. Like Frank Zappa songs telling me to eat my vegetables and songs telling me to drink and smoke. LMFAO. Only my dad. It makes me so happy to listen to it, like a little piece of home I can take with me anywhere. :)

I've been a terrible Liverpool fan this season, watching the whole thing unfold with a kind of detached horror. Hopefully it's coming to some kind of solution soon, but IDK. I always thought those people who said we'd become the next Leeds were way overreacting, but the possibility is sickeningly possible, isn't it? Everything is teetering so dangerously, I kind of have to look away. ... At least Germany are doing well? Turkey game this weekend though, minus Schweini. Man up, Deutschland!
sarkastic: (co - let's go film the sex scene)
While I'm in Austria I'm trying to somewhat ween myself off fandom (just while I'm here, of course, I am an addict after all) and I have been somewhat successful, although I would be a lot more successful if Inception fandom stopped producing like eight masterpieces every day. In any case, TV has gotten progressively shittier these past few years, so I don't watch much of it anyway. I'm not even going to give Glee and Brothers & Sisters a chance. Those are just really not "watch these while I could be having gelato and hot chocolate for lunch (JUST DID IT)" kind of shows.

So, except for The Good Wife, which I hope will be smarter than me or else I will be sad, I've watched all the premieres.

let's discuss )

So that's like, what, four hours of TV a week once MM is over? Totally manageable.

Blergh, why is it so cooooold in Austria? Eternal question. Good thing I brought a lot of sweaters. Also I find it hilarious and sad that I got a lot of "Oh, that'll be warm this time of year!" comments when I told people where I was going. False. Austria is not a continent in the southern hemisphere, and it is decidedly not summer here right now. Also they do not speak Italian here, because Vienna is not Venice. Sometimes Americans make me sad.

Holy shitballs, do not crosspost anything I write here to Facebook, Twitter, or any "normal people" social networking website. Look, I already get some weird looks (...emoticons?) for some of the stuff I like from FANDOM people, imagine what RL people would think. Damn, lj, you're lucky I'm too lazy to go to Dreamwidth.

Also, Archie Panjabi won an Emmy? My gleeful whaaaaaaaaaat could be heard from space.

Also also I am watching Before Sunrise and I recognize so much of it already. I can tell this will be a movie I rewatch a lot after I get back, just to take in the scenery. :)
