I just wanna preface this by saying I walked to school in -3F weather this morning. IN EARLY DECEMBER IN SOUTHERN INDIANA. This is not right. Anyway.

[livejournal.com profile] pennyplainknits asked me about Joan Watson.

One of my favorite things about Joan is that, despite people's ebullient tumblr tags that state otherwise, she's actually not perfect. There's this tendency to overcorrect when trying to make "good" female characters, where writers will have them do everything right, be beautiful, smart, kind, thoughtful, cunning, funny, sexy, brave, badass, etc. And Joan IS all of those things, don't get me wrong. She's just not all of them all the time. She makes mistakes. She gets in fights with people. She doesn't always look perfect. Okay, wait. That last one is totally not true.

My point is, Joan is real in a way that very few female characters on TV are real. Her motivations are understandable and consistent. She changes in ways that makes sense but sticks to certain principles and ideas when it's important. Her actions and personality are not defined by a man or her family - they're influenced by it, just as she influences others.

I also love Joan as the reclaiming of the Watson character from the bumbling sidekick stereotype he's been pigeonholed into in recent years. Sherlock values and respects Joan and is not afraid to show it. She's his partner in a way that Watson isn't really in BBC Sherlock or Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes. Since I can't stand relationships in which one person clearly sees the other as inferior to them, or at least acts that way all the time, I love this Watson and Holmes so much more than other current adaptations. There's nothing cool or ~edgy~ about treating someone you love like shit. You're not a tormented genius. You're just an asshole.

It feels like it's been forever since I talked about TV. Sadly that's probably because not much has been super amazing this year. But, still, some stuff has been pretty enjoyable. And now I am OFFICIALLY on winter break, so I actually have some free time!

Homeland )

Revenge )

Haven )

The Good Wife )

Elementary )

The Vampire Diaries )

Still loving my comedies for the most part: Happy Endings, Parks & Rec, Go On. I've also been slowly watching Archer on Netflix, and, yes, it is pretty amazing. I've also been watching Arrow, Revolution, and Once Upon a Time (yay women!), but don't have much to say about them. They're enjoyable but I don't think about them much afterwards. Except for how I wish we lived in a time where Aurora and Mulan could actually have the intense love story that they are currently basically having anyway, who the fuck cares about Philipp. Also sometimes I watch a little of Supernatural after Arrow and I side-eye it so hard. Damn, show, what happened to you?

Question, guys: I feel this weird temptation to attempt to watch Star Trek... of some variety. I'm a little wary, because sci-fi of THAT level of cheese can be difficult for me to get into (I really had to work to persist through season one of Farscape, and I always get bored with the Stargates very quickly). But I may try, mostly because all of the TV series (and some of the movies) are on Netflix. It's just so easy! Anyway, we'll see how this goes. Any input from fans about jumping headfirst into things would be appreciated.

Also, so excited about Justified and Spartacus coming back in January! Well, also kind of more bracing myself for Spartacus.
