I woke up at 7:30 AM totally 100% awake. Ugh. I am going to be exhausted later. And this just leaves me time to stew. I shouldn't stew.

in any case, some final random thoughts on this world cup )

Also I disallowed anonymous comments in my journal because I was getting trolled by random Spain fans. Which is kind of sad really. Your team just won the World Cup and you're trolling my lj? Priorities, people. Priorities.

In any case, the White Sox are winning their division. WHAT NOW?!
sarkastic: (foot - german bowling)

Well, I'm happy that we managed third place, because it really was well deserved based off of our entire World Cup performance. I can't tell you how good it is to see the boys smiling again. I didn't realize how much of my depression about this loss was tied to the total demoralization of what had been such a happy, dorky squad. But they seem to be gettin' their groove back. I hope they do a celebration when they get back to Germany, because they deserve it and so do the fans, tbh.

I will be cheering very hard for the Netherlands tomorrow, even though that makes me a bad Germany fan. But, god, I think I will have to become a hermit to be able to deal with all the Spain dicksucking that will go on in the media if they win. Everyone in the world already cries themselves to sleep at night because of their ~*beautiful*~ football. And the thing is? THEIR. FOOTBALL. WAS. NOT. FUCKING. BEAUTIFUL. Lol RAGE OUT but seriously. Their football has been boring and selfish. I mean, they could've won against Germany 3-0 but they all wanted a goal for themselves and refused to pass to each other. Poor, Spain, poor. Also I have to say that when Spain kept being picked as the underdog for the Germany game, I was like.... REALLY? REALLY? THE TEAM OF ROOKIE 20-YEAR-OLD BOYS IS NOT THE UNDERDOG AGAINST THE EURO 2008 CHAMPIONS?! KILL YOURSELF! (NOT THAT I'M BITTER OR BUTTHURT OR ANYTHING WHERE WOULD YOU GET THAT IDEA?!) Germany far, far exceeded any expectations and they showed just how ~fabulous German football can be. 2012, bitches! Best watch out. (Also I didn't realize we're also defending champs of the Euro u-17 and won the u-19 in 2008 in addition to being defending u-21 champs. The future is really, really fucking bright, people.)

Also I hope Sneijder and Villa don't score in the final so Mueller can win the Golden Boot, but somehow I don't see BOTH of those guys failing to score. Although with the way both those teams play these days, it could easily end up 0-0 and go to penalties. For once I am thankful that Bayern are the Evil German Syndicate because they'll actually be able to hold onto bb Mueller and develop him properly (well, hopefully, this is Bayern...) and not have to sell him to some big Spanish or English club. Look, I do not trust English and Spanish clubs to develop my German bbs. The Bundesliga is a fantastic league and clearly it isn't the ugly stepbrother league of Europe as we placed third with a team made up entirely of Bundesliga players. Stay in the Bundesliga, bbs! You'll always end up coming back anyway - sorry, Michael Ballack.

In any case: I'm as happy as a third place game can make a person. And I'll probably shut up about the World Cup soon.... and then start talking about my clubs.

The worst thing is that they didn't even play well. God, this happens to me every damn time. Why do I ever even get my hopes up? Germany, always in the top four, just never in first. I feel like somebody stomped on my heart.

P.S. Please no pity, Spain fans. I can't deal with it.
sarkastic: (foot - schweinski I want you on my team)
Ah, I'm terrified/excited/nervous for the semi-final. It's all I've been able to think about since Saturday. And while I have so much hope, it's like I have this built in defense mechanism from my teams justmissing it for as long as I've been watching football (which is, granted, relatively not that long - although I feel my fervor makes up for it ;) ). I mean, I don't know how many more times I can watch my boys get that trophy so close they can taste it, only to have it ripped away. *sigh* So while I have hope, some part of me doesn't believe it will actually happen, just because that's the story of my football-watching existence. But.... these boys are so good. They're better than any German team has been in a long time. FAR better than the German team at Euro 2008, and that team still only conceded one goal to a Spanish team that was stronger than the one they have now. That Spanish team rolled through Euro 2008 with total inevitability. Like Barca in the 08-09 season, some part of you knew that they were going to win everything. I can only hope that when I look back on this tournament, I can feel the same way about Germany as I did about Spain in Euro 2008.

If Germany score first, I think it will be nearly impossible for Spain to come back from that, since Germany can just rip open a team who has to take risks and attack, although Spain's defense is much stronger than Argentina's or England's. If Spain score first, we haven't been able to come back from behind yet, but the Serbia game had extenuating circumstances - in any case it will be very difficult. If it goes to penalties.... IDEK. I don't think Iker is as godly and untouchable as people think he is, but he is very good. And I... I have faith in Neuer. Should it come to penalties though, it'll be one of those times where I would kill for one of our older, vastly experienced typical German GKs. Jens should parachute in from his helicopter. But, hey, young and relatively inexperienced has gotten us this far, so we should stick to our guns. (But, um, in all seriousness? Wiese, for everything else he sucks at, is INSANELY good at penalties. CRAZY GOOD. It's actually sickening. Seriously, watch the first two minutes of that video. It will make you sick. This is the guy who saved three consecutive penalties from Hamburg (by which I mean not some shitty backwater team or anything). UGH. [Poor Hamburg that season. Ultimate FML.])

So, yeah, one way or another, this will all be over in less than a week. D: And no matter what happens, anybody who has a team left in the tournament gets to see their team two more times. But, goddammit, my boys are better than third place this year.
sarkastic: (foot - lahmination)

What more is there to say about these guys? They are talented, amazing, fierce, determined, steadfast - they are playing the most beautiful football at this World Cup. They are playing beautiful, clean, unselfish team football. They have depth and strength in every single position. They can score goals (WOW can they score goals), they can totally silence The Best Player in the World. I hope they win this whole tournament, not only because I love them with all my heart, but because this is the kind of football that I want to see win things. They are amazing, and I could not be more proud of them. I LOVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU, BOYS.

Well maybe not Wiese.

Also, I am listening to power ballads because only they can properly express the depth of my emotion.

This song has gotten me through many a tough football time. And I'm a Liverpool fan, so my pain runs deep. Let's all get drunk and talk about how much we love each other. Hug time now.

(The most positive thing to take from this tournament is that the US team, like the young German team, may not have what it takes to win everything this year, but they are on their way to becoming forces to be reckoned with in four years. I feel like this is the start of something amazing for Team USA, Men's Edition. Not to mention we got the ladies next year! They will almost certainly only make you cry happy tears.)

I lost South Korea and the US in one day. If Germany go out tomorrow, I may need to become a hermit in a cave for awhile.

GERMANY VS. ENGLAND

....LOL. JK. I am anything but confident about this game, but oblig penalties joke is oblig. THIS GAME IS GOING TO BE EPIC. HOW WILL I SURVIVE IT ASEKJDGHDLKFJHGDKGDGDKGJDGHDKJFGH

But seriously I am so, so happy that both my teams won their groups so I don't have to deal with one of my teams being knocked out by the other this early. And it is my dream scenario to get our PK rep back by beating England in PKs again. Although I would definitely take a straight up win!

I wait with bated breath for the first offensive Nazi headlines from the English tabloids!
sarkastic: (foot - star-spangled motherfuckers)

AH OMG STILL SHAKING AND CRYING RIGHT NOW I DON'T EVEN KNOW. This team just loves to make it as heart attack-inducing as humanly possible, but I am so proud of them. That was amazing and inspirational and they overcame TWO disallowed goals that would've had them topping their group easily and STILL managed to do it. A lot of teams would just whine and cry and blame bad luck for their loss, but they just kept on fighting. LANDON DONOVAN. Finally all the haters can shut the fuck up about him. I'm so happy for all of them. After the England game, they've all played with so much spirit and been so horrifically unlucky, that for them to reach this place is just... perfect. CONGRATS, BOYS. ♥

I HAVE POWER. THANK YOU BABY JESUS. I was reduced to driving around forlornly this morning trying to find somewhere to watch the World Cup. I have also accumulated a lot of knowledge about random subjects due to the Stuff You Should Know and Stuff You Missed in History Class podcasts. Good times. It's a good thing the electricity came back on before the Germany and USA games, because I need the freedom to curse horribly and - in the worst case scenario - cry deeply in the comfort of my own home.

random world cup thoughts )

I'm so nervous for tomorrow. I can't deal with another one-two football punch like the last time my two teams played. Also I've started reading Soccernomics. Very interesting so far, and totally spot on about England's entitlement issues.

All I have to say about the latest True Blood episode is: JFC, Eric Northman. JFC.

Also I'm really behind on comments. I had no power! :/

We had two huge storms with 100mph winds hit our county last night, so I haven't had power since about 6:30PM yesterday, and the second storm took out the land lines but we didn't have any damage to the house besides a lot of tree branches. We went outside this morning to get the lay of the land and, sure enough, one block down from us there's a huge tree downed that's pulling down all the power lines and took out a few of the poles as well (it miraculously missed the house it was next to by about a foot - damn those people must be feeling lucky). Looks like we won't have power back until about Monday or Tuesday.

Which I would be able to deal with, but it's really humid and hot, and the freaking World Cup is on! Luckily I have some friends who have power and I don't really care about any of the games this weekend. So it could be worse. But it's so weird to be disconnected from all the news and stuff. I just now found out about how truly abysmal England were and wtf Anelka was sent home? The French team is, tbh, disgusting me at this World Cup. It infuriates me that they took this chance from Ireland and now they are purposefully not playing well to stick it to their manager and breaking off into factions and ostracizing hot people. (ETA: And apparently the ostracizing of Gourcuff is because his dad is a coach and he's well-educated or something? IDEK. I need someone to explain why everyone hates Gourcuff, because he seems like one of the more likable Frenchies.) I HAVE RAGE. Also I can't decide if Ghana and Australia drawing is good for Germany or not. I suppose now Ghana might play for a draw, since they could go through on that. Hmmm. And also: AMERICA FUCK YEAH. I am still so pissed about that disallowed goal that I MIGHT JUST KILL SOMETHING.

I think I'm going to download a bunch of podcasts, because reading a book by candlelight is too frustrating.

Oh and I'm posting this from my mom's office, in case you're confused as to why I can still post things with no power. But if I'm not around much for the next few days, this is why. PRAY FOR THE POWER TO RETURN. We don't want my pet T-Rex to realize the fences aren't working and start eating lawyers.

I cannot tell you how much I miss Michael Ballack right now. Like a physical pain.

Firstly, some non-football business: What are your favorite baking/cooking blogs or websites? I've recently started attempting to delve into the kitchen, and I've found that food blogs are generally a lot safer a bet than cookbooks, since you can learn from others' mistakes. I'd love to know some of your favorite sites.

Now back to football. I think the first round games have proven something pretty clearly: speak German, win awesome games. Okay, I realize Swiss German is barely recognizable as a form of German BUT STILL. If Austria were in this World Cup they'd probably have beaten Brazil. I'm not even gonna pretend I didn't clap gleefully when that game was over. I am not that nice of a person. I hardly think Spain's dreams are over, but they have made it quite difficult on themselves, especially as I heard that Chile were pretty good although I did not watch them. I can't say I was incredibly blown away by Brazil either. A few moments of brilliance mostly overshadowed by mediocrity. In my of course totally unbiased opinion, I still think Germany put out the best performance in the first round by far.

Want some really hot pictures of the US men's NT half-naked, sweaty, and dirty? Hmmm, that's what I thought. They are here. I suddenly feel very patriotic... IN MY PANTS.

I woke up early to watch Denmark play... and then went back to sleep when it became clear that they weren't going to do much. Although I think de Jong should've AT LEAST gotten a yellow for that challenge on Bendtner. He could've broken his freaking ankle! The way these refs have been calling games, he should've been on a plane home. I couldn't watch the Italy game because you know how I feel about Italy? It's pretty much this.

Day 04 — Your favorite club team

Sigh. You know, after Euro 2008 when I first got into club football, there was nothing that made me choose Liverpool. The choice that makes the most sense for a diehard Germany fan and (then) big Michael Ballack fan was Chelsea, right? And it's true that most German NT fans I know (though not all, obviously) follow Chelsea if they follow any English team (although now there are NO international Germans in England, so IDK). So I don't know what it was about Liverpool that made me fall for them. That 08-09 season was glorious, though, wasn't it? They were all so happy and full of spirit and determination - they embodied the spirit of Liverpool FC. It was difficult not to be drawn in by that team. And then it all went to shit and continues this summer to flow in that general direction. But it's gone to shit before, and it's come back to be amazing again. I've been through much worse with other teams I love. The Chicago White Sox won the World Series in 1906, 1917, ....and then never again until 2005. I have no doubt that Liverpool FC, no matter how long it takes, will always shine on.

SHIT GUYS I'M GETTING MAUDLIN. But, seriously, I think I've come to some kind of peace about transfers. We know half the team is going to jump ship this summer. And it's going to suck. But.... Liverpool FC is so much bigger than any one player, than any eleven players. It's gonna be okay. GROUP HUGS AND POPSICLES ALL AROUND. You know when I think you know you're a real Liverpool fan? When you sing YNWA and you feel that physical ache in your chest of sheer pride and love and joy. Nothing can hurt us when we're singing that.

Greece vs. South Korea )

Argentina vs. Nigeria )

USA vs. England )

Serbia vs. Ghana )

I have yet to see any team play very impressive football. Mostly it's been unorganized, blunt, and ugly. Not entirely unexpected when not only is everyone having first-game nerves, they're also poorly matched to the skill level of their opponent. I'm hoping the next round of games will provide some more interesting stuff. But I think more African teams should score more goals, because they have AWESOME goal celebrations.

And now, decked out in my sadly obsolete Frings jersey, I will begin to prepare myself for the Germany game. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. OMG KLINSI IS ON MY TV! ♥_♥

Heeeeeeeey, livejournal. HOW AWESOME IS TODAY, THIS DAY OF DAYS? Well, the South Africa vs. Mexico game was awesome. The South African goal celebration was too adorable for words. And Desmond Tutu continues to be THE MOST ADORABLE MAN IN EXISTENCE I CAN'T EVEN. I was pleased to discover that my hottie for SA, Itumeleng Khune, turned out to be a pretty skilled goalkeeper as well. Well done, sir! The France vs. Uruguay game on the other hand? God, way to put people to sleep two games into the tournament. Not that I expected much from that matchup. Gives me hope that South Africa will be able to get enough points to go onto the Round of 16, though.

ANYWHO. Since I totally copped out on that Lost 30 days meme, I decided instead to do a football 30 days meme. Only one did not exist! So I ~created~ it. Memes have to come from somewhere right? OR ARE THEY GOD?!?! ... Hmmm. Probably. Well, you can tell I'm a little hyper today. Anyway, maybe I'll actually finish this one because it fits nicely with the World Cup... being 31 days and all. One day off. Oh well.

Day 01 — Your favorite active footballer

Pepe Reina is my perfect man. He's hilarious, genuine in a world of ass-covering bullshit, extremely talented at what he does, intelligent, exceedingly loyal, and loves his baby girls. When I was suffering through the last season at Liverpool, Pepe was the one person I could always rely on to perform well and actually show up in spirit rather just body. As we're bombarded with rumors of Stevie and Nando jumping ship the second shit got tough, the presence of Pepe calms me. He's without a doubt one of the most talented goalkeepers in the world. I would go so far as to say The Best, but I admit my bias. I really do hope there will come a day where he gets to be Spain's #1, because no one deserves it more.

PSA: You can download Weezer's inspirational Team USA power ballad that sounds like "I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight" at the beginning, for free from iTunes. It's called "Represent". That's what we do in the US.
sarkastic: (foot - star-spangled motherfuckers)
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YOU GUYS DO YOU KNOW WHAT TOMORROW IS. IT IS THE DAY THAT MY LIFE IS COMPLETE AGAIN. (It's the World Cup in case you didn't get that.)

I'm so excited and flipping my shit and terrified. I'm not TOO worried about Germany at this point. They are Germany, and Germany do well in international tournaments. It's just a fact of life. Germans perform well under pressure no matter how weak their squad is. I'm pretty certain that they will, at the very least, make it out of group stages. The great thing about this squad is that even if they don't go too far this year? They are going to be unstoppable in 2014 (and they should even be pretty brilliant at the 2012 Euros). Those German bbs are incredibly promising, and if they can't do it now, it's only because they need time.

As for the US, I am actually pretty hopeful. I think they can beat England. England are so freaking cocky and overconfident about this game, and NO ONE expects the US to put up much of a showing. That attitude served us pretty well in the Confed Cup. And I actually agree with ESPN for once and Alexi Lalas's words of wisdom: England aren't as good as they think they are and the US are better than people say they are. When people bring up England's qualifying campaign as evidence of how good they are, I just laugh and laugh and laugh. Yes, when your biggest competition is Ukraine, you've really overcome the odds. Augh, this game is going to kill me. I wish I hadn't started to care so much about the USMNT during this past year. It was so much easier when I only cared about the women's NT. They win everything!

My predictions for who will win it all, just to have it written down somewhere: I am going with the Netherlands. Because I refuse to say Spain or Brazil. Even if this makes me a bad Germany fan.

Also, ESPN2 is covering the World Cup today until 5. GET IN THE MOOD.

1. I'M SO GLAD YOU ALL LOVED MY SHIRTLESS FOOTBALLERS POST. I should've known the way to get you all to care about something football related was to involve nudity. I really should've known. I am still replying to comments, but I just wanted to say thaaank you for loving it. I mean, how anyone cannot love Yoann Gourcuff's dreamy eyes is beyond me, but still good to know I'm not a crazy person. In certain areas of life. Although I'm sad I didn't get to include my favorite footballer of ever and all time, Mr. Pepe Reina. Because *I* find him hot, but I don't know if other people do. And I think a lot of what is hot about him is his personality and how hilarious and kind and loyal and hardworking he is. And also how he tosses his baby daughters in the air. I LOVE YOU PEPE. YOU'RE ALWAYS #1 IN MY HEART. LOL EVEN THOUGH HE IS NOT ACTUALLY, ON ANY TEAM, #1. If he was the starting goalkeeper for Spain, they probably wouldn't annoy me as much. ALSO how did I not know Pepe and Nando are next door neighbors in Liverpool? Hey, Nando, you better stay in Liverpool so you don't have to leave your BFF. It would be sad for everyone.

2. I went to a White Sox game and got sunburnt to hell. Also it went from sweltering hot without a cloud in the sky to freezing and pouring rain and back again. Freaking Chicago. Every damn time I go to a game! But hey, they won and the Cubs lost, that's all that matters. Also: BLACKHAWKS. HELL YES. Anyway, they had to win. They couldn't bring shame upon Michael Jordan, Lord of Chicago, in his own arena.

3. Have I talked about how fantastic the new Doctor Who is? Because I eventually got over my bitterness from Ten and gave Eleven a shot and I am SO GLAD. I love Eleven, Amy, Rory, and although it's had some problems, nothing near the fail that RTD's episodes were usually full of. And for the most part the stories are interesting and make a semblance of sense! I'm very much looking forward to the finale. And I hope that Amy Pond will be around as companion for another season, but I have no idea, so if anyone knows, DON'T tell me.

4. I don't particularly like Rio Ferdinand, but I know how much it must hugely suck to get knocked out of the World Cup this late in the game. Still I am very excited that Stevie gets to be captain, something that I've always thought he was very, very worthy of, especially considering how up until the most current season he could single-handedly push Liverpool to a win through sheer force of will. I still hate the English NT, but I will of course be hoping that Stevie, Carra, and Glen do well for themselves. (I'm an American of German and Scottish descent. It would be WRONG of me to do anything but hate the English NT.)

ONLY FOUR MORE DAYS.
