football

I've tentatively started watching men's club football again. I never really stopped watching men's international, although Germany's embarrassing, heartbreaking loss in the last Euros was what drove me to give up football for pretty much an entire season - they just haven't honestly had that many important games in the interim (so even though I wasn't always watching, I didn't miss much). I, uh, did not deal with that loss well, and my hatred of Spain winning everything was just making it no longer enjoyable for me. Although that was just what tipped me over into quitting (for a bit). It was really all the bullshit politics and corruption and racism and sexism in the sport and its administration that ruined football for me for awhile. Anyway, I gave it a year, and now I've been watching Liverpool do relatively well this season and beat the Mancs which is awesome. I've been so out of the loop that I don't even know who half the players on Liverpool are anymore, so I need to get reacquainted with my team.

I am, however, pretty frustrated and upset with all the World Cup bullshit that has been going on. 2022 in winter? This whole situation is such a joke and ridiculously unfair to the other countries who made bids on the understanding that it would be held in summer. And just like.... wow, FIFA, could it be any more obvious that the World Cup is up for sale to whoever will give you the most cash, regardless of considerations for the sport or players or fans? And of course now there's all the human rights violations going on in the construction of stadiums that will likely just be torn down after the tournament because there are like twenty people in Qatar. If these plans for a winter WC go through, which they pretty much seem to be poised to do, the WC will potentially be at the same time as the Winter Olympics (I think? these things confuse me). THAT WOULD BE THE WORST. Not to mention, of course, the anti-gay laws in both Qatar and Russia. Obviously it would be a huge diplomatic clusterfuck if any foreign fans or players were arrested under these laws and definitely not Qatar and probably not Russia would risk the wrath of the international world. BUT. Just the fact that, legally, gay players and fans have that threat hanging over them is infuriating.

But, actually, despite my ranting, I am actually enjoying football again. I swear! Going back to it has felt very comfortable. It's still the sport I understand the most, that makes the most sense to me. I enjoy hockey but I'm still not that great at understanding tactics and it always takes me forever to get into the flow of the game. Not so with football. I mean, I'm no genius with football but I get what's going on. Also, no commercials! Sweet baby jesus did I miss that when I was busy watching all these American sports.

I haven't been up to much lately. I could talk to you about library science school but I find that it glazes the eyes of even my mother, that woman most devoted to and adept at listening to the boring minutiae of my life. Plus I get enough library talk with my classmates.

I've been reading the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson and loving it. Definitely one of the more creative and well thought-out forms of "magic" that I've seen in a fantasy novel. I also bought The Vintner's Luck by Elizabeth Knox and The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach, both of which were long-standing recs from the flist. I think I might save The Art of Fielding for when baseball starts though.

Shows I'm watching and genuinely enjoying/looking forward to each week: SPARTACUS!, Justified, Parks & Rec, Elementary, The Walking Dead. Shows I watch just because I can't seem to stop but don't really enjoy them anymore: Revenge, Once Upon a Time, The Vampire Diaries (ugh what a clusterfuck). Shows I am as of yet undecided about: new Community, The Good Wife (this show never quite gives me what I want, even though it is objectively good). New show I am trying out and as yet undecided about: Shameless US.

I know it's depressing when your sports team of choice is doing terrible and has no chance of anything, but, my god, it is deeply stressful to have not one but TWO teams who are on fire right now and serious title contenders. It's a lot more stressful with my Hoosiers because dear god college basketball and especially the Big 10 is like one months-long heart attack. Also the regular season is wrapping up and soon it will be tourny time and I will just have to go cry in the corner under the weight of all those expectations. That game last night just about ended me. How am I going to survive March?

Also: BLACKHAWKS AMIRITE?! I don't even know what's happening but I love it. It's great. I really wanted to go to a game but apparently tickets are pretty expensive. I can't get my pops to shell out the cash for us to go to one. I could just pay for it myself but.... I am cheap. And poor.

And then, there are stirrings of baseball. Whispers in the south. I don't know when I became so multi-sports-obsessed. I used to be a monogamous sports fan. But then I dumped football because it just made me sad all the time, and now I watch lots of sports. It's great! I actually haven't been missing football at all this entire season (and not just because LFC suck again this year). more football thoughts )

1. I did a rewatch of Teen Wolf. Still surprisingly kind of good in certain aspects. I mean, if you, like I assume most people probably do, believe that Stiles is the main character and not Scott. Scott's a nice guy, but he is very boring, and very dumb. Also, I forgot how much Bad Touch is in that show. Stiles and Jackson get manhandled by an older man like every other minute. And, on a certainly not at all related note, I've been enjoying the recent (and kind of random?) surge of new fic (including some of my favorite wrongdirtybad pairing, Peter/Stiles). I've been checking the Teen Wolf tag at AO3 religiously ever since the show aired, and suddenly there is all this great new stuff all the time. JOY. Also, my mom happened to be in the room while I was watching a lot of this, and became really attached to Stiles. She was very concerned for him and said, and I quote, "He's the only one with a lick of sense!" HE IS CATNIP TO ALL TYPES. And now I'm all excited for season two.

2. Baseball is back! Yay! I don't expect anything from the White Sox this year (hey, they won a World Series just last decade! I don't want them to strain themselves!), but it's just comforting to have it back. And I'm going to the home opener on Friday, which should be all kinds of awesome.

3. Football, on the other hand, I have been studiously ignoring for weeks now. Yikes. But Stuttgart have been having their usual second half surge and will probably play in Europe next year, so that's exciting at least. I've also realized that I am not hugely excited for the Euros right now. I think it's getting too close and the prospect of Germany getting really close and losing again in the semis or final (or god, even earlier) is causing my brain to avoid thinking about it. My poor battered heart cannot take it, especially if those smug Spanish fucks win again. Er. Not that I am bitter or anything.

4. Community was so great this week. I am a big fan of boring Ken Burns documentaries, so I enjoyed the loving spoof.

5. I think I got incepted by the hockey RPS people on my flist. I've started reading fic? I don't even know! I've watched hockey for a few years (I am a Blackhawks fan, obviously), and never been remotely attracted to any of these guys, because frankly I see them too often without their front teeth. But this fandom's got some good crack.

6. In other news: I have four weeks of undergrad left. Excuse me while I go throw up from terror, cry from sadness, and leap with joy at the same time. It's gonna be gross.

1. I missed my lj anniversary by a bit, but omg I have been on this thing for EIGHT YEARS. I was in the eighth grade when I started it! That is terrifying. I'm sorry for everyone I traumatized when they learned I was like 14 years old and reading their porn. But thank you so very much for corrupting me, fandom. Thanks especially to Alias fandom. You guys are still the best.

2. I'm only slightly embarrassed to admit I watched a large portion of the Teen Wolf marathon on MTV today. I forgot how ridiculous and fun that show is. And so. much. dubcon. LMFAO. There is not a single scene with Jackson or Stiles where I don't feel like one of them is seconds away from being dubconned by an older, violently aggressive man. That show is as subconsciously (consciously?! I honestly have no idea) dirty as Suits. Everything just ends up feeling real sexual. And not just because I have a dirty mind. Probably.

Also, Lydia is awesome. Why is she not in more fic? If Stiles weren't the gayest gay that ever gayed, I would totally ship it like the show wants me to.

3. There's been so much racefail in the English football media lately. The Guardian has been a particularly egregious offender. I'm not even sure why I read that anymore. They have their clubs they hate (Liverpool and Arsenal in particular), they have their blatant biases, they've demonstrated frankly disgusting sexism and racism just in the past few months alone. And their non-sports news is offensively biased too. It's a liberal bias, but it's still obnoxious. I may have to return to the BBC, at this point.

4. My friends from Vienna linked me to the Austrian Grocery. AGH. I want it all. But the shipping is insane. Boooo. Someone send me to Austria so I can buy a ton of stuff. I told my dad to keep an eye out for Stroh Rum, which he thinks he should be able to find in Chicago and which I need to make Punsch properly, but now I have a backup if we can't find it! Gott sei Dank!

For my class on the Balkans, I've decided to write a paper on the role that football plays in ethnic/political disputes/identity/etc. I was hoping some of you might be able to point me in the direction of good books or articles (or anything) written on this subject? Preferably pertaining to the Balkans, but I am willing to start anywhere. Oh, and the Balkans in this context includes Greece. Also anything about Turkey would be great too, as it is closely connected to the Balkans.

Thank you in advance!

1. I'm completely in love with this GoT vid: Thistle and Weeds by [livejournal.com profile] sisabet. It's Daenerys' S1 arc, done absolutely beautifully and wonderfully reminding after I'd lost it a bit after ADWD why I do love Dany so much. Actually, Dany's story in A Game of Thrones is possibly one of my favorite things in the entirety of ASOIAF, and DEFINITELY my favorite thing about the show.

Also, my conflicted feelings about Jaime Lannister continue to conflict me. Needless to say, I am excited to see what the show does with his storyline as ~events progress~, even though I think they watered him (and Cersei) down to make them more likable. Jaime post, er, That Thing That Happens, is a lot more interesting to me.

2. Spanish football, at this point, just kind of horrifies me as a whole. Where is that Tracy Jordan retreating backwards .gif when you need it? That is how I feel about La Liga. And both Madrid and Barcelona are equally awful, ugh! They're like the Ron Swanson and Tammy II of football when they're together. I will stick to the ridiculous and lovable Bundesliga and weary-old-man Premier League from now on. Just stop involving my Germans in your bullshit, La Liga!

...I won't lie to you, part of me is hoping this will fuck up the Spain NT.

3. I'm FINALLY going to a major league baseball tonight. My first (and probably only) one of the summer! I even had a dream about it last night. I am so deprived.

4. I'm going back to school earlier than I intended, because I got a job interview at the rare books library at my school. I waaaaant it. Fingers crossed.

Have a Collection of Random Thoughts With Peggy:

1. Here's my problem with the idea of Messi, or for that matter Ronaldo, being the best player in the world. Yes, Messi is truly amazing most of the time for Barcelona. It would be hard to argue that he ISN'T the best club player in the world. However, he really doesn't do shit for Argentina. How can someone be the best player in the world if they contribute so little to their country? I realize that with the amount of money involved in clubs they've started to take on a greater importance than country, but, quite frankly, fuck that. If a player never finds success in international football, no matter how amazing they are in club football, and, perhaps most importantly, if they're from a country that actually stands a chance in international football (which Argentina very much does), I don't know, to me that success is incomplete. I know that attitude is a result of my own personal belief that country is just as important, if not more, than club, and a lot of people don't share that attitude.

2. Angry Man Utd fans scare me. I'm like, okay, you beat our record, why are you still so angry? Mein Gott. Also, I surprisingly don't care that much. It's annoying, but. Eh. I'm just so happy to be in love with my team again. Anyway, it's way more exciting to win when you don't do it every other season. And I know about these things, I'm a White Sox fan. :)

3. I always forget how awful the ferret scene is in Goblet of Fire. Malfoy is not a nice kid, I get it, but he is also fourteen years old and being tortured and humiliated and JKR treats it as something comical. SO MUCH SIGHING. Hogwarts makes itself into a breeding ground for future Death Eaters by supporting such an atmosphere of hostility and distrust in these kids from the age of 10. Everyone from Dumbledore on down barring Snape treats any person sorted into Slytherin like the Enemy-in-Making, a second class student. Of course it's going to build up resentment and rage. Does that make it okay to turn into a murdering racist asshole? Nope. But, damn, it's frustrating how very far a little human kindness might've gotten "the good guys". Why does no one ever listen to the Sorting Hat! If it's our choices that define us, stop assuming Slytherins have already made it when they're barely preteens!

Also I find myself having a hankering for Draco & Narcissa fics. NOT incest, but I would love to know more about their relationship, develop it from the huge part it played in the final battle. I think, despite JKR's obvious hatred for Slytherins and Draco in particular, it makes them both about ten times more sympathetic (if you weren't already in love with them like I am).

4. I finally got around to watching the Skins series 5 finale. It was disappointing, and I am starting to slide back into disliking most of these characters. Oh well.

5. I forgot how truly awful the pilot of The Vampire Diaries is. The diary voiceovers! The terrible dialogue! Bonnie is kind of mean and has awful hair! Caroline is a total ditz! Stefan is creepy! Jeremy is a little bitch! So much terrible CW emo music moments! Tyler is a semi-abusive jerk! Vicki takes up screentime! Alaric does not exist! I couldn't even watch the whole thing. I just had to skip to the episode where Elena finds out and it starts to become bearable.

I think those are all my thoughts. It's been a gripping day.

srsly?

It is illegal to be drunk in public in Qatar.

Worst. World. Cup. Ever.

Not to mention the EIGHT MILLION other problems with their bid*, and I don't say this just as a butthurt American, I would've been happy to see Australia get it. (South Korea and Japan just hosted eight years ago!)

*Such as very little footballing culture in the country, up to 122 degree weather in the summer meaning either the players all keel over or they build AIR-CONDITIONED DOMES UGH UGH UGH, barely any of the infrastructure built and will just be torn down afterwards completely defeating the purpose of a country having the WC, tiny insignificant league and national team (ranked 113th) that will now take up one of the 32 coveted spots that another AFC team would be faaaar more deserving of, not to mention the awkward position female fans will be in. I just can't see how there will be any atmosphere at this thing. I know, twelve years to change things, but still. Why give the World Cup to a country with a pretty insignificant football culture? And, yeah, I realize the answer is the money signs you could see flashing in Blatter's eyes. It's rhetorical. ETA: Also homosexuality is illegal and punishable by up to 5 years in prison. Fun!

Russia, I'm mostly okay with. At least has a strong league and players I could name. Since Arshavin never ages will he still be playing in 2018?

I am still smiling with blissful joy from Lost because I just really enjoy being mindfucked by it. I think I need a cigarette now. some spoilery thoughts )

I've also been rewatching Band of Brothers as HBO reairs it ahead of The Pacific, and this time I think I'm really, really falling in love. The first time it's just a struggle to take everything in and figure out who everyone is and what the fuck is going on (at least for me, maybe I am dumb). But this time I was smart and found a guide with all the characters identified by picture. \o/ Although I still get really confused about rank and what people's actual jobs are. To be honest I think the military will always be a mystery to me. I've watched Generation Kill how many times now and I still don't really know what everyone's position is. SAD REALLY.

But anyway. THE LOVE. Too much of it to tell. (Also slashing Winters/Nixon like woah, which I don't think I got around to doing the first time.)

Also, I'm not gonna lie, this John Terry shit is cracking me the fuck up. When I try to explain it to people I just realize how it is the most ridiculous and trashy soap opera crap to ever come true in real life. If you don't know what I'm talking about, there is a handy graphic here to explain things. If they give the captaincy to Stevie G for this I will laugh for daaaaaaaaaaaays. Cheating on your wife with your best friend's girlfriend > punching people in night clubs because they won't play Phil Collins. Oh, England NT. STAY CLASSY, GUYS.

I keep posting sporadically and then never replying to comments and then being like AH I SHOULD NOT POST I HAVE NOT REPLIED TO COMMENTS but then I think of something to post and post it anyway. I dunno, I just don't have much of a fandom right now. Football is, frankly, depressing and I try to avoid it most of the time. Watching Liverpool play is just excrutiating for the most part, with one notable exception. Let's not even talk about Stuttgart. I watch Barcelona to partake in the viewing of a team that can actually win more than they lose, but even they fuck up. Sigh. My life is hard.

Anyway, let's talk about some TV I've been watching:

I'm also watching White Collar, which was yay! And Brothers & Sisters, which is just... itself. Oh show. If only you could be about Scotty and Sarah all the time. Project Runway is a joke this season.

I am recovering pretty well from my wisdom teeth removal, I think. I don't remember a thing about the surgery except waking up and swaying around like I was three sheets to the wind and then waving at my mom and being like, "Oh, hey mom. What are you doing here?" I just managed to get down some Chef Boyardee which may not be real food but GOD it was warm and I cannot tell you how awesome it was to have a hot meal. NOM. Also it reminded me of Generation Kill. *g* My cheeks are so puffy though. I look like a chipmunk only I am not storing food in my cheeks for later consumption. Just PAIN. But I've been poppin' pills like Greg House so the pain isn't really too bad, except for when I eat.

For some reason I have been watching a shitton of sports while being an invalid. I watched the Champions League final, obviously, and then rewatched the Liverpool Champions Leageu win in Istanbul because it felt appropriate, and then some White Sox losing and then the Blackhawks losing. Bad day for Chicago, I guess. I've also been watching all the French Open coverage on ESPN. IDEK. I didn't even used to like tennis. And, god, it's tiring just to watch it. I'm not sure which is more of an exhausting sport, tennis or football. But anyway I am starting to remember the rules from my days playing Mario Tennis and I have to say it's the most interesting thing on TV now. There's also a lot of college women's lacrosse on lately. I don't know what that's about.

Question for my football people: does anyone know if any American channels will be airing the Confederations Cup? I was thinking they might since the USMNT is playing. I want to see my Spanish boys even if I don't support their team.

Hee, sorry I am so boring. All I have the energy to do is gum rainbow sherbet like an old lady and apparently watch a lot of sporting events.
sarkastic: (foot - swabia)
I am confused about football. People who are smarter than me with these things, hopefully you will know the answer:

If someone gets a suspension from yellows and then transfers to a different club in the middle of a season, do they carry that suspension with them? Or if they just get one yellow, do they carry that with them?

And similarly, do the yellows given to the Chelsea players last night mean anything now that they're out of the competition in which they were given?

Also, to make [livejournal.com profile] bunnysayboo feel better, have some German penalty glory. REMEMBER THE GOOD DAYS, BB!

I looked back and determined: goddamn does this journal need more fandom!

1. Hollyoaks this week has literally been giving me heart palpitations of PURE JOY. Well, the last episode made me ecstatic and crushed at the same time. OH 'OAKS. Thank god I'll be kicking this habit soon. I didn't realize how much I'd missed You Know Who's prune face until he showed up again and got all grabby. And the ego is just as big as ever klsajfsklfjdkl! On the other hand, Verbotene Liebe has been pretty yawn-worthy lately. :(

2. Can I just express my PURE RAGE over the fact that Italy is now ranked higher than my beloved Nationalmannschaft? I don't know if you watched the Euros, but Italy? THEY KIND OF SUCKED IT UP. And Germany hasn't lost any games since the final against Spain. ITALIAN NATIONAL TEAM, I WILL ALWAYS DESPISE YOU. Even though I don't actually dislike any of the footballers. COLLECTIVELY I HATE THEM.

3. Prison Break brings the hilarity, as always. What makes it especially enjoyable is that I equally ship both Michael/Sara and Michael/Mahone. And who does Michael spend 90% of his time with? Well, either of those two, of course. Also, my mom's not buying Wentworth Miller's heterosexuality! I was talking to her and out of the blue she says his straight lovin' is not very convincing. I'm like, he was "seen around town" with Luke Macfarlane. That's tabloid code for gay.

4. I have... nothing else fandomy to say. This whole first week of college thing is a little time-consuming, and they haven't even had the club fair yet. Although if [livejournal.com profile] thehangedwoman can find time to read assloads of Snape/Hermione fic (WHICH SHE THEN LEAVES OPEN TO THE BAD SMUT ON MY COMPUTER) and take fifty million science classes, then I will manage. Although she is a hermit.

ETA: OH NOW I REMEMBER WHAT I WANTED TO SAY! I keep seeing people in football jerseys all over campus, and of course I always check to see the name. And I swear I've seen about a million Crispianos, which just makes a part of me die when I see it. And I saw a few Rooneys and Beckhams, which was just as soul-crushing. AND THEN I SAW A TORRES LIVERPOOL JERSEY. NANDO YOU SCOUSAH! And then, after all that awesome, I SAW AN EFFING SCHWEINI JERSEY. I think I cried, to see the Nationalmannschaft and Liverpool in the midst of all that ManU.

Also I saw a Cesc Fabregas lookalike but he gave me a funny look. Probably because I was gaping at him. At least I didn't get the stink eye like Laurie gets all the time for no reason.
sarkastic: (vl - christian/olli p.i.m.p.)
Okay, I am seriously years behind on comments, but I just have to say this: Verbotene Liebe, you win. Alright, I give up. You have just WON The Prize. I don't know what The Prize is yet, but you win it. CHRISTIAN AND OLLI. OLLI AND CHRISTIAN. Reminds me of the end of this scene in Queer as Folk 1x18. And, people, that is an HONOR that I do not give out lightly, let me tell you. That's actually my FAVORITE SCENE EVER OF ANYTHING.

In TRAGIC FOOTBALL NEWS, I went to a poster store today and the only football posters they had were of CRISPIANO RONALDO AND BECKS. I was so offended, I can't even tell you. I was like, "Not even some Spain? Did you not notice Euro 2008?!" In the words of Tim Gunn, "WHY DON'T I JUST SLIT MY WRISTS BEFORE I THROW MYSELF IN FRONT OF A TAXI?"

I like all the RANDOM CAPSLOCK in this post. It's probably because I had TWO COOKIES while at the mall tonight (why, yes, I am a preteen just out of the eighth grade, thanks for asking) and because VL JUST KILLED ME. And because I needed this after being forced to shelve for what have to be the sweatiest, most hectic, most fly-dive-bombed hours I've ever worked. DEATH TO THE LIBRARY. Not really.

ETA: Fine, Guy Burnet, YOU WIN TOO. I take back the mean things I said about you before. "If I was uncomfortable with kissing James Sutton, would I be doing THIS?" Oops, now there are tongue marks all over JP's face.
